The purpose of this study was performed to compare the effectiveness of chloral
hydrate with and without hydroxyzine HC1 when young children were sedated for
dental treatment. As a secondary purpose was to evaluate the SaO2 and
pulse rate in patients recieving chloral hydrate with and without hydroxyzine HCI.
Twenty -two children participated in the study ranging in age from 21 to 45 months at
the Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry Kyung-Hee Medical Center. Subjects were assigned
randomly to receive either 75 §·/§¸ of chloral hydrate alone or 50 §·/§¸ together with 25
§· of hydroxyzine HC1 : alternative regimens were administered at two appointments.
According to rating scale, sleep, crying, movement and overall behavior were checked
for evaluation of the clinical sedative effect. Pulse rate and oxygen saturation were
Measured for safety of the patients and recorded using pulse oximetry (Nellcor N-250
Pulse oximeter/display module, U.S.A) and were evaluated the change above or below
three-minute preoperative baseline for each step.
The results were as follows :
1. The successes of sedation were 81.8 % in chloral hydrate alone and 86.3 % in
chloral hydrate with hydroxyzine HCI. There were no statistically significant differences
among the two regimens with regard to sleep, movement, crying.
2. The adverse side effects were vomiting, nausea, diarrhea in 9.1 % of the
adminstrations with hydroxyzine HCI and 27.3 % without.
3. In chloral hydrate alone, statistically significant increases of pulse rate were
observed during period of anesthetic uptake, application of rubber dam and cavity
preparation (p<0.05). In chloral hydrate with hydroxyzine HCI, statistically significant
increases of pulse rate were observed during period of injection of local anesthesia,
anesthetic uptake, application of rubber dam, cavity preparation and postoperative period
(p<0.05).
4. Oxygen saturation in chloral hydrate with hydroxyzine HCI was superior to in
chloral hydrate alone, but there were no statistically significant differences two
regimens.
